The Allen Hospital

The Allen Hospital is a 200 bed community hospital located on the cusp of Manhattan as one of the five centers of excellence that comprise NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital system. The state-of-the-art ICU/CCU, labor and delivery, and operating room suites, as well as medical and surgical outpatient and emergency care areas, provide quality care for patients and robust teaching experiences for our residents, under the supervision of exceptional clinicians and educators from Columbia University. Family Medicine is the only hospital department permanently situated at the Allen, ensuring comprehensive care for all incoming patients.

Resident Education:

The Family Medicine Inpatient Service at the NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital provides the opportunities for residents to learn the skills and knowledge crucial for hospital care. The inpatient service team consists of one senior day resident (a PGY2 or PGY3), two first-year residents, and a senior night float resident. The service accepts patients admitted from the Emergency Department and from the resident and faculty practices. Teaching in the inpatient service is provided by two faculty family medicine physicians, a behavioral scientist, a PHD ethics/narrative medicine specialist, and a full array of sub-specialty consultants. Most residents feel that their experience at the Allen Hospital is one of the strengths of their residency experience at NYP/Columbia.

The Allen Hospital also provides our residents in training hospital experiences in the other major specialties. During their two and a half months of maternity training, residents experience the busy labor floor and postpartum wards, working one-on-one with members of the Family Medicine OB Faculty as well as the Allen obstetricians. The one month intensive care rotation allows residents to learn care for the critically ill under the supervision of intensivists from Columbia University´s Department of Medicine. The residents also rotate for one month with the general surgery service working directly with Columbia surgery residents and faculty. Finally, residents spend one month on the adult psychiatry service, learning directly from their faculty how to perform psychiatric evaluations and how to treat patients with psychiatric illnesses and/or chemical dependence, including inpatient referrals from other services.

The Allen Hospital is located at 5141 Broadway in Manhattan. It is accessible through public transportation by the 1 subway train at the 215th Street station or by the M100 or BX7 bus at 220th Street.
