Mission Statement
We seek to enhance the practice of medicine and remain a foundation upon which
contemporary health care is built.
- through teaching: train competent family physicians
- through service: provide excellent care to those in underserved and disenfranchised
urban settings.
- through research and community partnerships: improve care through applied research
and community educational activities
To the prospective residency applicant:
New-York Hospital and Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, two of the leading teaching hospitals in
the New York metropolitan area, merged in 1998 to form the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. In addition
to world-renowned research and quaternary clinical care, the merged hospital provides approximately
one million ambulatory care visits annually.
The importance of primary care and preventive services is now more relevant than ever before, as the influence of managed care has drawn primary care physicians from the periphery of the provider system to its center. Concurrently, much of primary care methodology is being reexamined from a more critical, scientific perspective. With this shift, the field of Family Medicine is reanalyzing relevant primary care issues and conducting clinical research that will provide meaningful answers to improving clinical practice and community health.
The Family Medicine Residency Program at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital (Columbia University
Medical Center) exists in this charged milieu. The program is committed to training physicians
who want to care for patients and their families, particularly those with problems unique to urban
underserved communities. This program strives to teach its residents how to develop systems that
can improve the health of whole communities. It encourages educating other fellow practitioners
on the impact and influence of Family Medicine, and most importantly, aspires to create change.
In short, the Family Medicine Residency Program is recruiting and training leaders for
tomorrow´s health care.
If after reviewing this description, you feel that this program is right for you, please do
apply. We look forward to meeting you.
